I Love You

In two weeks time she was going to be a fourth year, as she sat down on her bed in her hostel room, at the University of Nairobi, Hall 12, the room 411, it over looked the city of Nairobi and boy, didn’t it look beautiful, not only in the day but during the night. She thought that that view bet the Uhuru Park one; the view from Community overlooking Uhuru Park and the city was spectacular, it always warmed her heart, such beauty, it was just so beautiful. All these sites were perfect for a movie set, a romantic one, knowing all too well, that one of these days when she started shooting her own movies and series, sites would be everything. She felt she had a lot to give and a lot of stories to tell but it was harder than it seemed.

She turned and gazed at her table at the corner of the room, this actually made her giggle in a way. “I am still not making use of that table.”

It was full of cooking oil, mirror, sufurias, combs and books, sugar containers and many more things that her room to appear untidy.

“But the bed is more comfortable.” She smiled. “ As soon as I am done all have to do is lift my hand up and switch off the light.” She looked at the switch just above her bed; she could easily reach it while seated down.

“What am I going to eat?” She placed her hand on her stomach; she was starving, then turned and looked at the dirty plates on her table and sufuria. “I cannot cook, not tonight,” She thought as she got up and opened her cupboard, then took her handbag and sat on her bed. “ I have nothing to cook my food in, they are all dirty.” She took a fifty-shilling note. “ Fries!” she smiled.

Fries or chips’ depending on how cool you are was her addiction, at one point she had decided on giving up on chips for a week. She only lasted a day. She was thinking of starting a group for fry’s addicts, ‘chipsaholic anonymous’ she imagined herself saying. “Hi, my name is Mary.” Then look at the dismayed faces of her group members, “and I am addicted to chips.”

She would say that with so much shame on her face. Then her group members would comfort her. “It’s okay Mary. “We are addicts too.”

“But not today, I can form that tomorrow.” She smiled as she walked towards the door, it was closed, she remembered her keys, which she hardly knew where she kept them, her first guess was the bed, then the window sill, followed by the table, they were not there, to add insult to injury there was someone knocking on her door. She stood in the middle of the room and thought of where she could have placed them.

“If only keys could be flashed, then they could start ringing and I would know where they were.” She thought to herself.

“Anne!” her friend Mercy who was knocking impatiently at the door called out her name.

“Yes’” she resumed looking for the keys. “ Nafungua!” she called back.

She bend to look under the bed, pushing the chair behind her and her keys fell. She picked them from the floor.

“Yani even the keys play hide and seek.” She thought out loudly as she proceeded to open the door.

“Sema.” Mercy came in carrying some chapattis and meat.

“ We wee! Supper imecome.” She spoke in sheng.

“Haiya, una wazimu, bwanangu ako juu ananiwait.” She said referring to her boyfriend of two years. Even though in that same period she still had another boy, and another one. But now she was reformed and was only seeing her one true love that she spoke about on end. Why do women assume you want to hear about how sweet their boyfriend is?

“ So, you are not coming to watch the soap or TPF?” she asked. Mercy nodded. “ It’s Friday my boyfie always insists on talking me out.”

“Lucky you, I am going to the TV room, that has been my Friday plot like since forever.” Anne said sitting down on her bed.

“Blessed are those who have boyfriends.” Mercy joked. “ Any way I need text book ya Psycho, am sure kesho unaenda home na nataka kuchop exams ni Monday.”

Anne began to look around for the textbook always immediately; she opens her cupboard and takes her bag, the gives the book to Mercy.

“Thank you!” she says as Mercy walked out.

“Tell Mark, if he gets tired of you, I am here.” Anne shouted after her and closed the door.

Anne took her keys and headed the door, she had fries on one hand and some water and her phone, balancing them was not easy. As she struggled to close the door, her rang, she felt a bit annoyed. She placed her water bottle down but held on to her fries, she looked at the caller ID. It was Bernard. The guy she had met during the sports day that past Saturday. She had not dated any one ever and she was beginning to get a bit tired and restless of waiting. So far she he had only said he wanted a good time with her. She knew what that meant, but she had somehow managed to convince herself that he wanted to be in serious relationship with her. That’s the effect of being 23. It was getting harder each day to see everyone she knew at home, in campus in serious relationships.

“Hello,” she answered the phone walking towards the clotheslines.

“Sema.” He tried to sound sexy. “ Do you remember me?”

“Yes, I do.” She breathed in not to sound rude. “Bernard.”

He laughed. Mary did not think of it as being funny, she rolled her eyes.

“Where are you.” He asked.

“I’m in hall 12.”

“Si you come to my room.” He suggested.

“Where?”

“Am in Hall 11, room 104.”

She breathed in and looked around. If he was asking her to go to his room, it only meant he wanted one thing. SEX!
