The Cute guy that was never hers

Sex! The term stuck at the back of her mind. Virginity was an alien term in campus, sex was the craze, everyone was talking about it, and how fun it was. All this time she had waited, now she was beginning to lose hope, of ever meeting prince charming, her night in shining armor. Anne also, happened to be a very selective and kind of ‘vain’ girl, and thinking about Bernard; he was definitely nothing to write home about. He had the brains but lacked the looks, as for charm, he had none, he had simply stated in her face that he wanted to have a good time with her, though knowing what it really meant she had easily managed to convince herself that maybe, just maybe he had seen something more in her other than sex.

The most important thing she wanted in a man apart from the obvious, was support for the big dreams in her heart, so far she had hit so many dead ends when it came to her dreams, that had seem so promising, even though a bright campus student, at times she contemplated giving up and becoming a house wife, she heaved, a hopeless sigh. At times all she wanted was to give up and fall in the arms of the next guy that came her way.

Bernard, a stranger, whom she didn’t know anything about apart from his phone number and the course he did in campus, which were all irrelevant, wanted a few minutes of fun with her.

“Hello, are you still there?” he interrupted her.

“Yes,” she replied a bit abruptly. “Nacome kwa room yako kudo,” (what am I coming to do in your room?) she asked.

“We come utaona.” (Come and see), he said in a soothing voice.

She thought about it for a while, the fact that Bernard thought she would sleep her easily annoyed her very much, and that’s the mentality she had to fight each and every day, people thought that a young woman at the university was no different from the prostitute at Koinange.

“I don’t even know you.” She stopped as she could feel anger rising in her. “ I cannot come to your room.”

He laughed, a laughter that made her even angrier.

“Unaogopa.” (You are afraid). He said.

Anne rolled her eyes. “Naogopa nini? She sounded brave. “ The point is I don’t you, and since don’t know you, I am not coming.”

There was a minute of silence.

Anne wanted to cut it off but she thought it was his credit he was wasting.

“Sawa,” (Okay) he eventually said with a heavy sigh. “Can I come visit you then.”

“Sawa,’ (okay) she said.

“When?” he asked.

“Tomorrow, at 7.00pm.” she said.

As she walked back into the TV room, she smiled. “You can come but I will not be there.” She sat down next to her friend Irene.

“Storm imeisha? (Has the soap ended?) ” She said as she sat down. Her friend shook her head. She breathed in gently and began to watch the news highlights.

On Sunday evening Anne was busy in her room cooking and reading at the same time, she was due to sit for her first paper the next day in the afternoon, she had not prepared for her papers at all, every other thing apart from her books had kept her occupied, even though that was her primary course in campus. The smell of burning onion made her rush to where her cooker was. She hurriedly took the tomatoes, one look at her jerrican where she stored some water, and to her dismay, there was none. Her onion was already burnt; it was now black in color. She reduced the heat on her cooker and took her keys and rushed towards the bathroom with her tomatoes, which she washed and went back to her room.

Afterwards she settled down to go through her notes, her roommate was with her boyfriend, they speaking in a tongue she could not understand, Mercy her best friend was busy entertaining her boyfriend John a few floors up. Julie her roommate walked into her side of the room.

“Anne,” she said pulling the curtain.

Anne knew

“I am going to Club 36.” She announced. “ Si you help me with one hundred shillings, I will give it back to you.” Club 36, is the market place where university of Nairobi students bought their meat and vegetable supply.

Anne gave her the one hundred shillings and quickly went back to her books.

“Sweetie.” Her roommate Julie called her boyfriend as she went out. “Narudi saa hii (I will be right back), let me go buy supper.”

“Sawa sweetie,” her boyfriend replied.

Anne went on reading, she was so busy cramming that she did not hear Jason, her roommate’s boyfriend come in, to her side of the partitioned room.

“Sema.” (Hi)

She almost jumped from her bed with fright, also causing her books and papers to fall on the floor, regaining her composure only when she saw it was Jason.

“Hi,” she tried to smile. He bend over and picked up her books and papers from the floor, he then proceeded to sit down next to her on the bed, placing the books and papers on the bed, as well. All this time, Anne had her eyes on him.

Jason was a very cute guy and she could not help but blush, a different tribe, a fact her parents, more so her mom, would be on top of her ‘are you eligible to marry my daughter.’ Guide, but if Jason was her boyfriend and she introduced him to her mother, she would definitely approve. Surely God did not make them this ‘good’ anymore.

“ How are you doing?” he smiled at her.

“ I am fine.” She said pushing her books away. She could feel her whole body begin to melt next to him, she was also trembling a bit, and her body temperature seem to have doubled.

“ Why didn’t you say hi to me, when I came in.” He moved closer to her. If it weren’t for the fact that she somehow liked Jason, she would have laughed.

“ Hiyo Ni kazi ya Julie, (that’s Julie’s role), she replied, “ plus I am not in the mood for a cat fight, I have exams.”

At that point she had almost regained her composure when Jason who was chuckling at her remarks took her hand. Her strength departed her and she felt weak. Soon Jason had his arm around her, she wanted to pull away, as she remembered Julie’s ex had cheated on her and it had left her devastated. If this happened again, she might kill herself, but all these thoughts seemed so far away, all she could think of, was how could it felt as she stared into the eyes of a very cute guy, that wasn’t hers.

It was all-good, until the door knob turned, Julie was back, she had a forgotten, a paper bag. Jason and Anne froze…
